Is Microsoft 365 Secure by Default?
No - and the numbers prove it. Research on Microsoft 365 tenants found that 85% of organizations using M365 have suffered a data breach, and 15% of them reported 500 or more breaches in the last year. Meanwhile, 8 out of 10 SMBs rely only on the basic email security that comes with the subscription, and nearly 70% of those experienced a serious breach that bypassed it anyway.
Microsoft 365 is not insecure because the platform is bad. It is insecure because it arrives flexible and generic: the settings that protect a 500-person enterprise are switched off by default, and nobody at a 20-person company has been assigned to turn them on. With Exchange Online processing over 400 billion emails a month and 92% of enterprises standardized on Microsoft 365, attackers know this platform is where the targets live.
Which M365 Misconfigurations Put SMBs at Risk?
These are the misconfigurations we find most often when we review small-business tenants - each one is a door that is open right now:
- No MFA on admin accounts. The global administrator accounts that control everything are frequently protected by just a password. This is the single most dangerous finding we see.
- Default security only for email. Exchange Online Protection (EOP) blocks known spam, but the advanced threats targeting businesses - business email compromise, credential harvesting, payloadless attacks - need Defender for Office 365 or an equivalent layer.
- Missing or broken DMARC, DKIM, and SPF. Without them, anyone can send email that appears to come from your domain. Your clients cannot tell your real invoice from a fake one.
- Unlimited external sharing. SharePoint and OneDrive links set to "anyone with the link" leak documents indefinitely, long after the project ended.
- No audit logging or alerting. Without logs, a compromised mailbox can be read for months before anyone notices - and there is nothing to investigate with afterward.
- Stale accounts and forgotten owners. Ex-employees still licensed and still receiving mail; break-glass accounts nobody monitors; billing and global-admin roles mixed together.
How Do I Fix My Microsoft 365 Security? The Checklist
Work through these in order - most take minutes, not days:
- Turn on MFA for every user, and enforce security defaults or conditional access policies - no exceptions for executives
- Separate your admin accounts from daily-use accounts, and protect them with the strictest policies you can configure
- Publish DMARC (start in monitor mode), configure DKIM signing, and align SPF for every domain that sends as you
- Review external sharing defaults for SharePoint and OneDrive; set expiring links for anything sensitive
- Enable unified audit logging and alerting for suspicious sign-ins and mailbox rule changes
- Run a license and account audit: disable every account that is not a current employee
- Add a secondary email-protection layer (Defender for Office 365 or an equivalent) for phishing and payload detection
- Back up M365 data to a separate system - Microsoft's availability is not the same as your backup
- Schedule a quarterly review - tenants drift, and settings that were right in January are wrong by June
That last point is where most businesses fail: they fix things once and never look again. Our IT audit and compliance services include recurring Microsoft 365 configuration reviews, and our vulnerability assessments catch what drifts out of place between visits.
What Does Business Email Compromise Cost?
The FBI puts business email compromise losses at more than $50 billion since 2013 - and BEC almost always starts exactly where this checklist begins: a compromised or spoofed mailbox, a convincing request, and an employee who had no way to tell the difference. We covered the payment-fraud angle for finance teams in our wire fraud analysis - it pairs directly with the M365 hardening above.
The good news: unlike most security problems, M365 misconfiguration is one you can fix yourself, this week, mostly with settings you already pay for. If you would rather have it verified by specialists, contact us - a tenant review is one of the highest-value engagements we run.
